Q - I won’t end up clucking like a chicken will I?
A - No. Definitely not. Clinical hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis are very different animals. The role of the stage hypnotist is to entertain and there's nothing wrong with that as long as everyone is aware that this is the objective. Anyone who has watched Paul McKenna's TV shows will realise that there are times when Paul uses hypnosis purely to entertain and times when he uses it in a therapeutic way (perhaps to rid people of fears and phobias or improve their confidence). You will never see him mixing the two styles. His skills are always used appropriately.
As an advanced Clinical hypnotherapist, I have been trained to follow specific clinical protocols and to treat my clients with dignity and respect. If I were to misuse hypnosis in the consulting room, I would be struck off the General Hypnotherapy Register as I am bound to operate within its Code of Practice. This would be disastrous in terms of my practice and my career and no insurer would be prepared to cover me. So, be assured, your consultation with me will be dignified and totally focused on a therapeutic outcome.
Q - How will I hear what you’re saying if I’m asleep?
A - It’s a common misconception that hypnosis means being in a deep sleep. It’s true that you might look as though you’re asleep, because you’d probably have your eyes closed, but it definitely isn’t sleep.
Everyone experiences hypnosis differently but one way to describe it might be to say it's akin to daydreaming. You’re aware of what’s going on around you but you don’t always consciously notice it. How often have you driven somewhere then realised you didn’t have a clue how you got there because you were on auto-pilot at the time? You certainly weren’t asleep, you were just operating at a different level of consciousness.
Q - Do I have to be referred to you by my GP?
A - No, you don’t have to go via your GP. However, if you are hoping to get hypnotherapy on the NHS, you will need to discuss this with your GP. Some Primary Care Trusts are prepared to use funds for hypnotherapy, but not all. If you are in an area which will do this, my NHS Provider number is 8HF69. Otherwise, you will need to go privately. In this case, call and make an appointment with me direct. My consultation fees are set out in the 'Fees' page.
